About our Psychologist

Kathryn Bekavac is a fully registered psychologist with endorsement in Educational and Developmental Psychology. With teaching qualifications as well, she has combined strengths in psychology and education.

Therapuetic approach and experience
Kathryn has 20 years’ experience of psychological practice in the education sector and prior to that 10 years’ experience in the health sector. She uses Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to help each person to find balance within themselves and do more of the things that matter to them.

Kathryn trained to become an educational and developmental psychologist at the University of Queensland, Brisbane and has worked with children, young people, adults and families. As well as ACT and CBT, Kathryn has had training in Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT), Emotion-focused therapy, Psychoeducation and Growth Coaching.

Besides private practice, Kathryn works in a large education system leading psychological services in primary and secondary schools for improved student and staff mental health, wellbeing and learning. She works with school leaders to build staff capabilities and innovative practice through consulting, coaching, knowledge sharing networks, training, accreditation and responsive professional learning programs. She also facilitates effective responses for critical incidents and crises in schools that empower school teams with evidence based decision making, recovery and resilience.

Kathryn is in the process of writing scientific articles for publication and her PhD research project is focused on “Conditions for Learning: Maximising Engagement for Wellbeing and Learning in Schools” at the University of Queensland, Brisbane.
